The Subtle Knife is the second book in Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials fantasy series.

Summary of the Book

Lyra and Will are on the run, each of them searching for something they desperately need to find. Lyra wants to know the meaning of Dark Matter, and Will wants to find his father. However, their hunt leads them to a deadly weapon, a knife with unimaginable power. And before they know it, their lives are tied together as they become inseparable.

Philip Pullman is a British writer, best known for his fantasy novels, and the fictionalised biography of Jesus, The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ.

The first part of this trilogy was adapted into a movie entitled The Golden Compass, starring Dakota Blue Richards, Daniel Craig, Eva Green, Tom Courtenay, Christopher Lee, Nicole Kidman and Sam Elliot, winning a BAFTA and an Academy Award for visual effects.

Series Reading Order

This book is preceded by Northern Lights, also entitled The Golden Compass. The story converges towards its end in The Amber Spyglass.
