From the pen and ink of cartoonist Herge comes the story of a young newspaper reporter and his dog. The Adventures of Tintin: Volume 1 is the first in a compendium of books collecting the first two cases.

    Summary of the Book

    1. Tintin  in the Land of the Soviets

A young Belgian reporter called Tintin is sent to the Soviet Union to uncover the secrets of the Bolshevik government. Soon, Josef Stalin's government is out on the lookout for him and his little dog Snowy.

    2. Tintin in the Congo

The second Tintin adventure sees Tintin and Snowy embark on an adventure into the Belgian Congo, where he is caught in the war between two tribes. But what Tintin finds is a criminal operation run by a man known only as A.C.

    About Herge

Georges Prosper Remi, otherwise known by his pseudonym Herge, was a Belgian cartoonist. He is best known as the creator of Tintin, penning 23 books in the series. He was also behind Quick & Flupke and Jo, Zette and Jocko.

    Tintin History

This book has two Tintin stories unlike the other volumes which collect atleast 3 stories in 1 volume because "Tintin in the Land of the Soviets" is a huge story (taking up 2/3rd of the book), which broadly involves Tintin trying to get to Moscow to report on the conditions in the erstwhile USSR while avoiding getting killed by the Russian secret service. The artwork in black and white is quite rudimentary and it hardly resembles the Tintin of today, but it a rare glimpse at how Herge's work ...

    A classic revisited!

What is there to say about Tintin that has not already been said by people much better at this than I am? Limiting it to saying that this hardback edition is a great way to build your collection. Hope something like this is available for Asterix too.

Caution :Buy only if you want to complete the Tintin collection

This volume contains the first 2 stories written by Herge. Although i have high regards for Herge or Tintin but these 2 stories are exception. The first one "Tintin in land of Soviets" was written in the form of a comic strip in a newspaper in the 1929 when Herge was in his early 20's. Similarly "Tintin in Congo" was written in 1930 when Congo was a colony of Belgium. Due to the propaganda and changing dynamics of that era, both these stories are filled with stereotypes of Russians and Africa...

    A must-have volume for collectors.

This book contains the first two Tintin books, "The Land of the Soviets" and "The Congo". Hence, it is a must-have volume for collectors. They are very interesting as historical works - you can see Herge developing his style - but the subject matter is appalling by modern standards. The depictions of the Russians and the Congolese are ridiculously stereotyped, offensive and old-fashioned, but they are arguably completely representative of the time they were written in.

    Half good:-)

There are two books in one. The first one is an early work of herge. Its in complete black and white so that was a bit of a let down. Otherwise both stories are good ..what you normally expect

    Hergé - You Beauty

Having read all of the titles ages ago, I picked up the hardbound volumes specifically since my dogs like Tintin as well. Its proper, the print is as I remember it - though the size is not Demy; but collect them all I say. Amazing reads if you want to lighten your mood and your PS won't do!
