Bird By Bird: Some Instructions On Writing And Life is a guide on what is needed to be a writer and how life is in the world of writers.

    Summary Of The Book

The title of the book has been based on an incident from the author’s childhood, when her elder brother, who had to write an assignment on birds on a very tight deadline, was told by his father to take it bird by bird.

Bird By Bird: Some Instructions On Writing And Life is a guide on how to write books and manage an author’s life. It focusses on the dull reality and the spirituality of a writer’s life. The author encourages, inspires and instructs through her insights on introductions, assignments, characters, false starts, first drafts and appropriate endings. She also talks of writer’s associations and publications, with an honesty and sense of fun rarely seen these days.

She goes on to say that the will to write for oneself is reason enough to write. According to her, writing is important because of one’s spirit and their heart as they widen, deepen and extend the purpose for our living. She gives ideas on how to find inspiration and deal with a project that sounds overwhelming.

Bird By Bird: Some Instructions On Writing And Life is a hilarious, grounded, practical, and warm guide for those who have wondered what is required to be a writer and what it means to be a writer.

It not only carries good advice on craft, art and life, but is also funny, entertaining and cynical. By mentioning ‘shitty first drafts’, the author also makes it clear that most possibly, the first draft would not be perfect; therefore, also making it quite evident that it is alright to make errors.

    Anybody can write

I have rarely come across book readers these days and none of them are into non-fiction. While some still manage to read self-help books most of them wonder what else is there to read. I always hunt for light reads that don't require the kind of commitment a novel does. Books that let you open any page you please and still absorb and engross you for how much ever little time you have are my kind. I read about this book on a sunday newspaper and decided to read it as i have this occasional ha...

    Amazing book for aspiring Authors..

Loved the book and it was so interestingly written that you never feel like you are reading something that's trying to teach you something.. but Anne Lamott took you for a personal journey with fun and humor thrown in, and in the end you realise that you have learned a lot... subconsciously.
    loved it.

    Too self centered

I found the book self centered and self congratulatory.Definitely not a good guide if you have some real interest in creative writing and want to know about it.

Spend your time and money elsewhere

This book has been a waste of time. The author is self-indulgent and her writing lacks humor. I am surprised by the numerous reviews on Am@zon claiming the book is hilarious. If you're looking to get a laugh, you are better off reading David Sedaris' works. If you are looking to study the art of writing, Stephen King's "On Writing" shines (and also advertises itself correctly as a memoir alongside a book on writing). Please sample the chapter called Jealousy to get a sense for the utter lack ...
