  • Description

Chokher Bali is an enduring work written by the Nobel Prize winning Indian author, Rabindranath Tagore, which depicts complex human relationships. The Bengali work is translated to English by Radha Chakravarty.

    Summary of the Book

Binodini is a captivatingly attractive widow who comes to live in Calcutta, in the house of Mahendra. Mahendra lives with his mother and newly-wedded wife, Asha. Although he is fond of his adorable wife, he is enormously fascinated by Binodini. On the other hand, Binodini is attracted to Bihari, but she never lets anyone know about it. She and Mahendra even flee one day, leaving the family shocked. Bihari brings them back to Calcutta, but will the broken family be able to live in perfect accord like it had before? Tagore delves into the most natural and intricate instincts of human connections beyond any traditional names and labels in Chokher Bali.

    About Rabindranath Tagore

Rabindranath Tagore was an Indian poet, writer, and philosopher. His writings are considered the epitome of Bengali literature and several of his short stories and novels have been translated into many languages and have subsequently been adapted into hit movies. He is best remembered for: Gora, Kabuliwala, and The Home and the World. He was the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, largely for the English translation of the Gitanjali. He was also conferred a knighthood by the British Empire which he renounced to protest against the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.

    wonderful story

chokher bali is the story of four souls mahendra, binodini. ashalata and bihari..their thoughts, their beliefs, their cravings, their understanding all mixed with a certain dose of passion and lust. binodini is a ravishingly beautiful young girl entangled in the shackles of her widowhood, ashalata is a naive, innocent bengali young bride, mahendra is a typically educated bengali-babu. a doctor by profession, he is always biased with only his wants, his desires and is very judgemental in the r...

    Revelation of the heart!

Tagore has said about the novel, "I have always regretted the ending".

Chokher Bali is a complex tapestry woven by the emotional interplay between five finely defined characters: the impulsive and weak Mahendra, his adoring mother Rajlakshmi, the frail and sensitive Asha, the strong willed, silent Behari, and the self-willed and irresistibly attractive, scheming Binodini. It is not storytelling, but as Tagore himself says in his preface “a revelation of the secrets of the heart".

A must read to understand emotions better

I happened to read this book recently and it wasn't through Flipkart. Yet I would like to share my thoughts about the book as this is one of those books which remains in your heart, days after you have finished reading.
Rabindranath Tagore has won my heart with this novel and it is the emotions that he so beautifully personifies as his protagonists that make him the master craftsman that he is.
The story ends most beautifully. If the writer chose to end the story otherwise, it would certainly...

    Tagore tune

It is an excellent read, just like any of Tagore's novels. This translation by Radha Chakravarty is brilliant. One cannot escape the mindblowing use of similes and metaphors. She was my teacher in my undergrad and one of the best teachers I have come across. I just can't get enough of the comparisons and imagery used in this particular text. I have already suggested this book to many of my friends.
