People who were arrested after the Chauri-Chaura incident belonged to the entire district. They were silenced by the unbridled administration with bayonets and other terrorist methods and accused them of killing policemen. 22 policemen (actually a total of 24) were killed, but the discriminatory colonial judicial system ignored the fact that the police opened fire on peaceful protestors, killing many and injuring many. The death toll in a crowd of thousands would certainly be higher. Many of the 172 people were hungry farmers. They were so hungry that if they are hanged they will pay a heavy price for the 'war for freedom'.
