Tony Hsieh founded and headed the online shoe and clothing site Zappos.com. In 2009, it was acquired by Amazon, a deal that allowed Tony Hsieh to make around $214 million. In 2010, he came out with his book, Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion and Purpose.
This book is a chronicle of Tony Hsieh’s entrepreneurial career. It notes how his business philosophy led to most of his business ventures becoming enormously successful. The book is divided into three sections: Profits, Profits and Passion, and Profits, Passion and Purpose.
The book highlights how Zappos.com attained the heights of success. Tony Hsieh lets the reader know about the mistakes that he made during his entrepreneurial career and how these can be avoided with the right approach.
The book highlights the importance of attaining the right balance between profits and happiness in both business as well as personal life. Hsieh states that the way to reach this balance is by ensuring that the brand is not just enduring but has the power to win over the loyalty of both customers and employees. Tony Hsieh emphasises that the aim should be to develop a business that helps in defining inspiration and happiness.
The book hit the No. 1 slot on the New York Times bestseller list and remained there for 27 consecutive weeks. It was profiled in leading publications like The Huffington Post, The Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal. It remained for nine weeks on the USA bestseller list and was listed among Amazon’s Top 10 books for two months.
Delivering Happiness:A Path to Profits, Passion and Purpose was publicised by the author in an extremely innovative manner. He gave away free copies of the book to bloggers in exchange for a review. He also partnered with the Livestrong foundation and used the book to raise money for cancer care.
About Tony Hsieh
Tony Hsieh is an entrepreneur, who is widely known for being the CEO of Zappos.com.
Hseih has also co-authored books such as Peak: How Great Companies Get Their Mojo from Maslow and A Complaint Is a Gift: Recovering Customer Loyalty When Things Go Wrong.
He graduated from Harvard University in Computer Science. His first job was while he was still at Harvard, and he sold pizzas at Quincy House Grill. He started his professional career at Oracle, but soon got tired of the corporate environment. Hsieh then quit to start LinkExchange, an advertising network. LinkExchange was sold to Microsoft as Tony Hsieh set up an investment firm, Venture Frogs. This was followed by his next and most successful venture, Zappos.com.
