Rosewood "Inlay work" or commonly referred to as "Patch work" is an art form practiced for many centuries in and around Mysore. This art form used to enjoy the patronage of the Maharajas of Mysore who used it not only to decorate their palaces but was also used as a precious gift to other royals. Each and every piece was created by experienced artisans who practiced the craft through generations drawing inspirations from religion, wild animals, nature and everyday lives of people in and around Mysore
Creating a single wall panel with inlay work is an intensive and multiple step process involving the skills of three different kind of expert artisans. A set of diligent craftsmen first smoothen rosewood planks and carefully etch designs of the narrative on its surface. Another set of craftsmen then painstakingly cut and assemble different kinds of wood based on the choice of color into the etched groove. Finally, all the plank is curated and polished to perfection. A single wall panel can take anywhere from a few days to more than month based on the size and narrative depicted.
