Kashayas (Kwathas) are the basic form of medicine in Ayurvedic system. Kashayas are the aqueous extract of drugs i.e. decoction prepared by boiling the drugs with water and concentrating it. They are also the basic ingredient in the preperation of medicated oils & ghees, Lehyas, pills.... etc. Unlike in the ancient times, where the physicians used to prepare kashayas personally for their patients or patients prepare it themselves, in reply to the need of modern man they are prepared in bulk and is available in ready to use form.The medicinal ingredients are taken as per the respective yogams (Recipies) are cleaned, washed, pounded and boiled in required quantity of water. When the quantity of water is reduced to quarter portion, filter off the kashaya and concentrated again to required volume, which is then packed in cleaned bottles hygienically after adding necessary quantity of preservative. Generally the method of administration is 5 to 15ml. with thrice quantity of boiled and cooled water, twice daily in empty stomach or as directed by the physician.
