Magnificent

Simply magnificent! An excellent narrative of the events leading up to India's independence. Books on history are sometimes boring, owing to an attempt on the authors to describe events on a broad scale, and to remain impartial. The result of such efforts is usually a narrative where bland facts and figures rule the roost. Lapierre and Collins do an excellent job of blending the human side of things along with the fact; it is an account of history that evokes genuine emotion.

Magnificent, Enticing, Accurate, Significant

Greatest book to read on India's independence struggle. It is an interesting read with a lot of details and written in a story like manner. The authors have done a thorough research on the subject. They truly have spent time with Lord Mountbatten to get the facts straight. They even have interviewed the assassinators of the Mahatma. The authors have explored and conquered the facts extremely well and provided readers with this Classic.
Feels good to own this great book!

I had heard about this book from my friend years ago but did not get a chance to read it till few days back I saw it in flipcart. Book was delivered in 2 days (Amazing flipcart).
When I started reading this book I thought it would take many months to complete it, but the contents were so interesting and infomative that I could not stop myself reading it day and night. Fiished it in few days and was mesmerized by the amount of information it had.

Freedom At Midnight

Easily the most thrilling way History of the days leading to Freedom of India can be recounted. The author duo of Dominique Lapierre and Larry Collins have taken great effort to make History entertaining. The amount of research done by the two authors has brought out a compelling read about the days before freedom. The research was so vast that the authors had about 800 Kg of documentation and transcript of nine hundred interviews and archives, when they started to write the book. The fact tha...

Comprehensive

A comprehensive account of the happenings during the Independence of India and the Partition. Though one feels ultimately that it is a book tilting very much towards the role of Lord Mountbatten and Gandhi but does not record the comprehensive role of Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar patel during that period. Nevertheless it is a good third party perspective by the famous western Historians. Must read for all mature readers.

Dramatic Independence of India

Freedom at Midnight is by far one of the most detailed books written on the creation of new subcontinent. It potrayed the players involved and their roles for freedom of India and its partition to immense depth. The highlighting feature is the additional information pertaining to some event or personality of politicians mentioned at the end of the pages. Its a fantastic eye-opener for those who are intersted to go behind the scenes of sub-continent politics. Free flowing, lucid and dramatized...

Time travel into Indian History!!!

I read this book during my first year of college, and I must accept that it was my first love with any history book. :) Every chapter, every narration is so excellent. Covering entire period of History/India national movement, it is a well read and must be preserved for our future generations.

Though written by foreign authors it is neither favoring nor showing any bias. In fact after reading of this book one will realize how rich our history was..

A must read by each and every Indian.

Unputdownable read!

As most reviews would suggest, this is a marvelous piece of writing covering the events of 1947 in classic detail. Authors, being French and American, have done justice to a story involving India and England. The story moves in large parts from the perspective of Mountbatten and Gandhi and the vivid picturization of events littered with anecdotes and sharp one liners make this an excellent read. The book holds your attention throughout (only the details of the partition in Punjab is quite len...
