  • Description

The Girl with all the Gifts written by M. R. Carey is a post apocalyptic zombie thriller set in a dystopian society.

    Summary of the Book

Years after the zombie apocalypse, which was caused by a mutant strain of fungus, scientists in a remote location in England are working on a cure by experimenting on a group of zombified children. These children retain some of their original emotions and cognitive functions. The story starts with 10-year-old Melanie's bizarre world through her narrative voice. The author has presented Melanie as an innocent, vulnerable girl, who is struggling to balance the hostile environment she calls home with her yearning for love and affection. But there is much more to Melanie than what meets the eye and this is the reason behind the harsh treatment meted out to her. Will they continue treating Melanie like the other zombified kids in the asylum?

A fresh look into zombie apocalypse genre

The book doesn't give detailed information at first, and as the story unfolds so does our knowledge of the world in the book and what happened. Melanie's innocence and wisdom beyond her age gives a fresh and heart-warming perspective into otherwise dark survival story. A must-read for fans of the genre, and recommended for all book lovers.

I expected an emotional and heart warming story. But I got World war Z mixed with The Walking Dead. Good thing I swing that way too. It was OK. Not exceptional in any sense, except for the ending. That ending. It was utterly unexpected and totally blew me away. I still don't know if I liked it. Probably not, hence the 3 stars. But kudos to it for hitting you out of nowhere.

M.R. Carey presents a richly layered novel with the spirit of a graphic novel

The author M. R. Carey is no stranger to X- men fan boys. He has worked on numerous Marvel arcs including - and this I read up- X Men: Legacy and the Ultimate Fantastic Four. Also, notably, for DC he is the Eisner award nominee with the comic book Lucifer. And he's British...if that swings it for ya.
A couple of pages into the novel and you realize a few things – that it is of the post apocalyptic genre and that it is essentially about Zombies. And just like each author has his or her nomencl...
