Saffron can grow nearly anywhere in the world. The kind of soil is far more important than the climate of the region where one wants to grow it. Vegetation cycle... Saffron bulbs germination only when day high temperature is below 30C and flowering only when day high remains below 10C . Vegetative development in winter. Leaves dry out in May.. Soil and location Saffron corms like a well drained soil. Heavy clay soil must be avoided. The ideal type of ground is a neutral clay-calcareous or silty soil (PH 6 to 8) . Planting & Care When you plant your saffron crocus bulbs, place them in the ground at about 3 to 5 inches deep and at least 6 inches apart. About 50 to 60 saffron flowers will produce about 1 tablespoon of saffron spice, so keep this in mind when figuring how many to plant. The bulbs are small and rounded, with slight pointed tops – plant with the points facing upwards. If you can t tell which side should face up, plant the bulbs on their sides; root action will pull the bulbs into the right position. The saffron bed must be in a sunny place, notably in autumn during the flowering stage Harvest Flowers generally appear in October (slightly later in the first year) and last for a month . Avoid overwatering and waterlogging condition. Apply organic fertilizer in autumn season and immediately after flowering.
