  • Description

Guns, Germs and Steel: A Short History Of Everybody For The Last 13,000 Years is a book on history and political geography by Jared Diamond, which tries to unearth the truths and mysteries of the ancient human civilization and how the advancement process came into being.

    Summary Of The Book

This book details that till about 11,000 B.C. the people living in the world were primarily of the Stone Age group. It was roughly at that point of time that a breaking off happened, which slowly led to the evolution of societies and groups. Gradually, people started getting involved in farming and rearing numerous plants and animals in parts of Eurasia and parts of the Americas. There was a gradual rise of planters and animal domesticators. It can be learnt from the book that the people who got rid of other race groups and resorted to measures like conquest, removal, and replacements are the ones who had advanced in the paths of becoming civilized and improved groups. The road which started from searching for food in random places and ended in proper organized living was greatly affected by the weather and the topography too. But, there remains the curiosity as to how the segregation occurred and how various cultures and traditions came into being.

It is also unclear why the Australians, Americans, or Africans did not rule over Europe. The author, Diamond, reveals that the various explanations about racial activities whose reasons are often traced back to cultural divisions are actually the reason of biological separations. He comes up with valuable instances and proofs that there was a relation between germs and living beings’ civilization and also goes on to discuss the ways in which germs got scattered in uncontrollable limits in the journey of civilization and advancement. This updated edition comprises a brand new chapter on Japan and also contains new illustrations and instances taken from the television series.

This book exceeds the materialistic boundaries like government, religion, technology, and agriculture, and delves deep into the undiscovered truths about the human advancement process.

    Rigorous Explanation of Historical Unfolding

Jared makes an scientist like case for explaining historical reasons for how/why things have shaped up differently for different people on different continents.
Mildly repetative( less than 10%), but the rigour and logic in arguments is pervasive even though dealing with a topic falling under "History" category.
In the end he even makes a case to consider History as a Social "Science".
The book has in store some surprises, if you need to know where bananas came from, or when did people start ...

    Best in the market!

Brilliant book , a coherent and engrossing work of literature. Facts backed by science are explained in a logical manner. This book gives a broad view on how things transcribed in the history leading to societies as we see today . A must read, as it doesn't involve rocket science or pure boring history filled with dates

    Good choice

Well....great as great can be! Though repetitive and may seem boring. Still it is revolutionary. Sapiens-a brief history of mankind and this 'little' piece completely change ones attitude towards history.

Excellent book ! It changed my worldview

I really liked this book. Makes a very interesting point about how civilizations evolved and why some (the western ones) prospered while others remained as they were. All the while I was looking for a racist angle that says westerns societies prospered because they are inherently 'superior' but there was hardly any. All the evidences he provides seems to be valid as per my understanding. I thoroughly enjoyed the book from beginning to the end. It gives you a lot to take home.

    By the way, th...

    A must for History Enthusiasts

This book is a classic in the field of Evolutionary History-Geography and how Geography shapes the histories of different areas. Though Jared Diamond completely overlooks Indian civilization, it is a very good read to understand how different factors play in for a civilization to flourish and perish.

    A great read!

This is a great book for anyone who is interested to know more about the history of the human civilization. I'm still half way through the book, and I have thoroughly enjoyed it so far. Jared Diamond has meticulously collected evidence to support his ideas and concepts. Personally, the best thing I have liked is the information I get about our past. For eg, "Why Native Americans settled much after Eurasians?", "How the decision to farm or to remain hunters affected the future of a society?" a...

A very well written analysis that makes easy reading. I am not in a position to assess the robustness of the research and analysis behind it, but it sure makes credible reading.

    Delightful

    Jared Diamond's - Gems, Guns & Steel

    Rating - 3.5/5

Gems, Guns & Steel is an extensively researched book written exclusively for the 21st century.
    .
    .
Diamond has done something here that was rather unfathomable. He has tried and largely successfully at that- to answer, and nullify, the claim of race superiority- with a certain ease and flamboyance to boot!
He lays down enough theoretical evidence to claim why some states rule the world and prosper while others seem to be stuck in time.
