  • Description

Long considered the pivotal work on the topic, The History of Western Philosophy examines multiple schools of thought across the West, and treats the mind to a buffet of thoughts from the greatest philosophers ever born.

    Summary of the Book

Bertrand Russell's book covers, in its erudite, comprehensive and wittingly graceful language, the entire schools of thought that have pervaded throughout the millennia in the west. Touching upon the ideas of Pythagoras, Heraclitus, Parmenides, Empedocles, Socrates, Hobbes, Bacon, Aquinas and a myriad others, Russell explores the way Greek philosophy evolved into Logic and how modern philosophers still relate to the earliest teachings. He shows readers how Greece changed much about how civilization is and should be perceived, for while Egypt and Mesopotamia existed long before the Greeks, what lacked in either of the other two was depth of intellectual progress, something the Greeks brought to the table. In the sixty years since its publication, this book has often been termed as an unparalleled work in the field, drawing in generations and generations of readers to the platform of intellectual thought.

His favourite topics were: metaphysics, the logic and the philosophy of mathematics, the philosophy of language, ethics and epistemology.
