If On A Winter's Night A Traveller is a novel which has the reader as the protagonist. The book consists of books which are incomplete, and how the reader tries to solve the mystery as to why it is so. This novel is intriguing, unusual, and exciting.

    Summary Of The Book

If On A Winter's Night A Traveller is a novel which places the reader as the main character. The reader starts to read a novel, but after about thirty pages he realizes that the book has a printing flaw. The first portion is repeated multiple number of times. Frustrated, he takes the book back to the bookstore where he meets a young woman, Ludmilla, who is also facing the same problem.

If On A Winter's Night A Traveller shows that as the reader continues to read different books, he keeps encountering some printing mistake or the other, thereby never getting to complete even a single novel. He then decides to visit the publisher to find out why this is happening. The publisher tells him about Ermes Marana, a fraudulent translator, who has purposely mixed up book contents, authors, titles, and more. This chaos seems impossible to set in order, so the reader decides to look for Marana. He lands up in a place called Ataguitania, and finds himself in a completely unexpected situation.

If On A Winter's Night A Traveller is a single novel, but essentially tells ten different stories. It was originally published in 1979, and in 2009, it was positioned at the 69th place in The Telegraph’s 100 novels everyone should read.

    Tour-de-Force

Imagine picking up a book, sitting down to read it ,and then finding that the book is about a reader who is picking up that same book and is sitting down to read it himself--and voila--you are hooked! This daring experimentative novel by Calvino explores and questions the very nature of what a novel should ,or rather, could be.It is a story within a story within a story ad infinitum and in each instance --the protagonist is you--the reader who is actually reading the book at this instant.

Buy it if you like the thrill of being teased

I bought it on a friend's recommendation. And I must say this is one hell of a book. You are teased, amused and left bewildered by the work of the author. When you think you've had it, BAM!! Another surprise.

IT IS NOT A SUSPENSE OR A THRILLER. But the contents of the book will definitely take you into a world of the suspense, thrill, nostalgia and even paranoia. Must read for every reader, I'd say!

A novel dedicated to the reader

Take the beginning of just about every novel you have ever read and just when you start getting a hint of what the story might be about, break off and launch into another tale.Slowly you will realise that all stories tend to common threads of resolution and a novel really finds its truest manifestation in the mind of a reader.Calvino's genius lies in never letting you guess what he will say next and yet finding a common thread within a very disparate set of stories where YOU,THE READER is the ...

    Must buy!

Can't just name it as another good book.... the plot was extraordinarily unique.. the idea behind penning down such a wonderful novel is hats off..... if you are looking for a book that will give you a break from your usual genre reading, its a definite go to book.... very different classic.... bit lengthy but worth a read... plot goes on like a reader brings a book and finds it unfinished then searched for another book with the same title then again ends up with another story. again he buys ...

    Fabulous!

This book made me feel that I was reading my own diary at many places! It was little difficult to read continuously due to it's complicated structure and some hard words. But trust the book, it is worthy of one's time and emotions.
