  • Description

Policy discourse in India tends to be dominated by assertions unsupported by facts, with the media indulging one and all without proper scrutiny. Often, the result is the creation and perpetuation of myths of all kinds. Thus, many believe today that poverty, illiteracy and ill-health afflict India because its leadership ignored them in favour of growth for its own sake; that the economic reforms that focused on growth have failed to help the poor, especially the socially disadvantaged; that any gains claimed in poverty alleviation derive from the use of progressively lower poverty lines; and that even if gains have been made, with one in two children suffering from malnutrition, reforms have done precious little to improve health outcomes.

In this definitive book on economic reforms in India since Independence, Bhagwati and Panagariya decisively demolish these and other myths, which critics use as weapons to wound and maim the reforms. Using systematic data and analysis, they forcefully show that once the debris of critiques of India’s reforms is cleared, it becomes evident that intensification of reforms – that allows sustained rapid growth – is the only way to lift millions out of poverty, illiteracy and ill-health. They argue that only growth can provide sufficient revenues for the provision of education and good health for the masses.

A definite read for someone who really wants one factual data regarding India's development

This is one of those books which gives clear facts and figures(not some manipulated numbers to make your point) regarding India's development in different fields such as poverty alleviation, growth, education etc.The authors have gone to the root of many myths about India's development and have literally debunked them which was very interesting to read(eg why kerala is so ahead in the field of education). WASTE!

An extremely poorly written book.Littered by dry facts and figures and lacking cohesion, it is written more in a puerile pamphlet style, eager to establish an already drawn conclusion rather than in a serious intellectual spirit.I was expecting more but was utterly disappointed.

Please do not buy this form flipkart. Amazon gives it in much lesser price (Rs. 333 for hard cover and Rs 243 for paperback). Thus the price differential is more than 200. also they took Rs 50 for delivery charges though the book is a part of the order exceeding Rs.1300 .The quality of the book is also very bad. Flipkart has resorted to its exploitative tendencies and taking unnecessary benefit of non- regulation in the zone. Crony capitalism is at its best.

Guys, do not be misguided by the...

    India's Tryst With Destiny

It is a great book. The author has done a tremendous job in his research and collecting data. Every Indian who is interested in economy and business should read this. Only negative about this book is that i found the language not very interesting in a couple of chapters. Those couple of chapters could have been better written.

    Myth Buster !

The book really debunks a lot of myths that seems to be floating around in the media and newspapers. The arguments are substantiated by concrete facts.
Arguments against prevalence of high malnutrition-rate in India is very interesting. Similarly discussions on growth, poverty, health and education are convincing.
Recommended for those who are interested in issues of growth and development.
The book is an eye-opener for people who are always eager to jump on the bandwagon of Leftist ideology.

A MUST READ FOR ALL INDIAN'S

Anybody who is involved or interested in India's struggles against poverty, corruption, education and road to development should be reading this book. The authors have painfully worked out the many problems facing India backed by clear data and statistics.

After reading this book,I have reaffirmed my belief that growth and growth alone is the mantra for India's success. We should do away with our archaic laws, regulations and inspector raj which is standing between India and its destiny
