  • Description
'This is history bursting at the seams with English eccentrics and Indian gentry...the charm of Tunzelmann's approach is to restore her cast to full and vital life' Observer 'A compelling narrative, sometimes controversial, occasionally perverse, never boring or unintelligent' Spectator Fully revised and updated for the 70th anniversary. The stroke of midnight on 15 August 1947 liberated 400 million Indians from the British Empire. One of the defining moments of world history had been brought about by a tiny number of people, including Jawaharlal Nehru, the fiery prime minister-to-be; Gandhi, the mystical figure who enthralled a nation; and Louis and Edwina Mountbatten, the glamorous but unlikely couple who had been dispatched to get Britain out of India without delay. Within hours of the midnight chimes, however, the two new nations of India and Pakistan would descend into anarchy and terror. Indian Summer depicts the epic sweep of events that ripped apart the greatest empire the world has ever seen, and reveals the secrets of the most powerful players on the world stage: the Cold War conspiracies, the private deals, and the intense and clandestine love affair between the wife of the last viceroy and the first prime minister of free India. With wit, insight and a sharp eye for detail, Alex von Tunzelmann relates how a handful of people changed the world for ever.

    Good

Got the book in great condition. Been nreading it. It's written frommthe British perspective and a book of things as seen by the British history writers. Most of the sources are cited and are either newspapers from that time or goverment documents.

    the truth

a quality book which shreds a lot of light on India, how it was divided. the attitude of different leaders and above all the relationship between Nehru and Edwina. i would suggest it to all who want to know about india and from this book we can also conclude that we were destined to be a underpower because of jawarhar lal nehru.

    Super!

What I learnt from this book is that partition of India in 1947 was inevitable (none is to blame alone) and your network with people is much more important than even your popularity among the mass. Finally. thumbs up for the writer, she has done extensive research in writing this piece-a remarkable work altogether!

    a monumental work

I am not a reviewer type. But I am impulsively forced to write. Only to say that if I had a chance to read this book at the time I was in school my academic inclination might have been influenced to history. This is how history is to be presented. All my praises to Ms. Von Tunzelmann. I do eagerly wait for her next book.

    Awesome

The book presents a gripping narrative of events during the days of independence. What is remarkable is the portrayal of the characters of Mountbatten, Lady Mountbatten, Nehru, Gandhi and Jinnah.
