  • Description

Dante’s Inferno is a classic poem describing Dante Alighieri’s descent into hell.

    Summary of the Book

Dante’s epic medieval poem describes his own journey through hell. As he walks through a dark forest, seemingly lost, he comes across the ghost of the poet Virgil. Virgil offers to help him find his way, but the path leads straight through Hell. Dante accepts, braving the infernal stages of hell. Along the way, he encounters people who are condemned to each level. He describes their suffering and their sins. Despite common belief, the multi-layered idea of Hell stems not from the Bible but from Dante’s epic poem. The poem draws on common mythology, contemporary ideologies and stories that were commonplace at the time. Dante’s poem has influenced most of the Renaissance art, and his work has inspired even the likes of John Milton. This poem is considered an epic work of Christian mythology.

    About Dante Alighieri

Dante Alighieri was an Italian poet of the Middle ages. He is best known for the composition of the Divine Comedy, widely considered the epitome of Italian literature.

Known as il Sommo Poeta ("the Supreme Poet"), he is considered the Father of the Italian Language. The Divine Comedy continues with Purgatory and Paradise.

    What I Wanted

I will give this a five star because I have insane respect for Dante.
Four pages are dedicated to a short introduction about the life and times when this was written.

There is also a comprehensive 28 page dictionary at the end which proves extremely helpful.

I do wish there were short explanations at the beginning of each chapter, but I can overlook that because I don't like overly long footnotes in study books that influence the readers imagination and interpretation of the subject.
    But I ...
