Kadambari (English, Paperback, Chandrakant Kamala)
Kadambari is originally known to have been compiled by Banabhatta, the court poet of King Harshavardhana, who passed away before finishing the text. The book was later completed by his son, Bhushanabhatta.
Summary of the Book
Compiled by Banabhatta in Sanskrit in the first half of the 7th century A.D., this romantic novel is divided into an earlier part called Purvabhaga and the latter part called Uttarabhaga. The original work has an enormously complex plot, with Kadambari herself appearing only half-way through. One version of it can be found in the Kathasaritsagara, amongst many other ancient favourites. The title continues to be translated into several Indian regional languages. Kadambari is often regarded as one of the earliest novels – and the word Kadambari itself has come to mean a ‘novel’ in many Indian languages today, including Kannada.
