Antiscalant is a pretreatment water additive for reverse osmosis system that is highly effective in preventing the membranes from scaling. Before the feed water enters the reverse osmosis membrane, an antiscalant is injected into the water and sent the through the system. There are a large number of chemical suppliers who supply a variety of proprietary antiscalants and dispersants to improve the operation of ro and nf systems. Antiscalants are a family of chemicals designed to inhibit the formation and precipitation of crystallized mineral salts that form scale. RO antiscalant helps to control inorganic scales of calcium, magnesium, barium, strontium, fluoride, iron and silica. RO antiscalant ensures above 80% reduction in scaling tendencies if used continuously. Antiscalant for Reverse Osmosis is invulnerable in handling and use with a very high recovery rate of membrane. In membrane desalination operations at high recovery ratios, the solubility limits of gypsum and calcite exceed saturation levels leading to crystallization on membrane surfaces. The surface blockage of the scale results in permeate flux decline, reducing the efficiency of the process and increases of operation costs. The effects of scale on the permeation rate of RO systems is illustrated in the following figure. Following an induction period, plant flow decreases rapidly.
