Where to grow: Balcony or terrace garden Sowing Month: October to November Sowing method: Direct/Seedling transplant Germination Temperature: 12-20°C Germination Time: 7 to 14 days Blooming time: 10 weeks after planting Sweet Peas Growing Season in India It is best to sow sweet pea seeds from October to November as it is a cool-loving plant and in India, sweet peas are winter flowering plants. How To Grow Sweet Peas From Seeds You can sow the sweet pea seeds directly in pots or gardens or start with the seedling transplant method but before sowing seeds soak them for a few hours so that they germinate faster. The best temperature for the germination of sweet pea seeds is around 12-20°C. Sweet Peas Seeds Sowing Method Take a pot or grow bag fill them with potting soil mix, and sow the seeds about 0.5-1 inch deep and at a distance of 3-4 inches from other seeds. Water the soil through a watering can and place the pot in a sunny spot as light aids the seeds to germinate fast. The sweet peas seeds germinate in 7-14 days. Fertilizer For Sweet Peas Flower Plant Add bone meal/rock phosphate with vermicompost to the sweet pea plant every 25-30 days for healthy and early flowering. Sweet Peas Plant Care Tips Soil – Use rich and well-drained soil to plant sweet peas. Water – Sweet peas prefer moisture in the soil, water the soil weekly or when soil becomes dry. Sunlight – Sweet peas require full sun but they also grow well in partial shade on hot days. Temperature – Sweet peas grow best in cool weather 12-21°C, they can tolerate light frost but not extremely hot temperatures. Common pests and diseases – Generally, sweet peas are free of diseases but some pests aphids, and pea moths bother the plant. You can use neem oil to avoid these pests. Sweet Peas Bloom Time Usually, sweet peas take 10 weeks to flower and if you have sown seeds in September-October, sweet peas start flowering from February to mid-April. After 110-115 days, seed pods start forming in the plant, and then it dries up and ends its life cycle. You can collect seeds for planting next year.
