The ammonia enter tank through water which is chemically treated with disinfectant chloramine. MERRITO KIT (Range 0-8ppm or mg/l) detects Ammonia in ppm level within 5-10 minutes with accuracy. Kit is portable .The decomposition of organic matter, fish excreta, urine and uneaten food are other sources of ammonia in water. The biological filters are used to control ammonia level, however ammonia imbalance can still occur. Ammonia damages gill membranes and create respiratory problem in fish. High level of ammonia causes fish death. Even traces of ammonia decreases immunity of fish. Their gill will become red giving impression of bleeding. The fish looses appetite and they become lethargic and lay at bottom of tank with clamped fins. Ammonia poisoning ultimately leads to death of fish. Therfore it is important to keep check of ammonia level.The only safe level of ammonia is Zero ppm. Concentration of just 2 ppm can cause death of fish. Maintain zero or lower levels of ammonia in tank or pond for healthy life of fish.
