The biological filters are used to control ammonia level, however ammonia imbalance can still occur. Ammonia damages gill membranes and create respiratory problem in fish. High level of ammonia causes fish death. Even traces of ammonia decreases immunity of fish. Their gill will become red giving impression of bleeding. The fish looses appetite and they become lethargic and lay at bottom of tank with clamped fins. Ammonia poisoning ultimately leads to death of fish.
