Lumia 540 is the true successor of Lumia 520. Its has covered many of the mistakes made to the earlier lumia phones.
Design is great and similar to Lumia 630 and 640. Its better than the bland design of other phones in this catagory.
Camera is also great with 8 MP and flash. Also this isn't like other compay's 8 MP cams has Nokia is always known for their high quality mobile cameras even in the low end.

I wanted to move out of Android for a while and this was a good choice. I read the reviews on Lumia series, went to a store and bought one immediately.
Pros:
1) Touchscreen is awesome, one of the compelling reason for moving to Lumia. Display is pretty sharp
2) WiFi downloads are fast, very rarely had heating issue (once out of 7 days usage)
3) Camera (both front and main) are pretty good. Front one is 5 megapixels..

Terrific Phone. If you are a fan of Windows phone, this is a good choice. I am using a LUMIA 1320 6 inch phone which is also great. I got this for my wife. I like this so much that I am thinking of exchanging the same with her.
The phone is sturdy to hold and is smooth with the touch. The only discomfort is the lack of buttons at the bottom like 1320. the swipe at the bottom of the phone is not too good an idea. The screen is vivid and size is perfect for holding in your shirt pocket...

Initially i was too tensed about the battery life. Since i was using an iPhone before my Lumia 540. Moreover, i had already used 3 Android devices in the past. So, Windows was my last hope. But, i must tell, boy Lumia 540 is superb, except for two things:
1. Facebook is slow.
2. You don't get to use too many apps like android.
But, if you are thinking of a new smartphone. It should be Windows phone / Lumia 540, because
1. Better than IOS and Android
2. Almost one fourth the price of an iPhone...
