Tinea Versicolor is a fungal infection commonly found among children and young adults. This fungal infection causes the skin to change color, either lighter or darker, and usually appears on the shoulders, chest and back. Tinea Versicolor is caused by a yeast that usually lives on the skin of most adults without causing a breakout. The fungus produces a chemical which affects the pigment of the skin which results in lighter (or sometimes darker) patches of skin. Breakouts seem to occur in high humidity and hormonal and immune changes may contribute. Tinea Versicolor is not contageous. Although it can reoccur, so treatment needs to be repeated.
