  • Description
A Buddhist monk takes up arms to resist the Chinese invasion of Tibet - then spends the rest of his life trying to atone for the violence by hand printing the best prayer flags in India. A Jain nun tests her powers of detachment as she watches her best friend ritually starve herself to death. Nine people, nine lives; each one taking a different religious path, each one an unforgettable story. William Dalrymple delves deep into the heart of a nation torn between the relentless onslaught of modernity and the ancient traditions that endure to this day.LONGLISTED FOR THE BBC SAMUEL JOHNSON PRIZE

Good research in deed, a a must read for everybody who wanna know about true India

Dalrymple known for his research based on culture, is for sure given a treat for those who wanna know few of the many other facets of Indian culture.
Definitely India is not just a bucket of vEdic juices; it also has a various modified, localized, manifested forms of the culture which for sure comes out of those same "moola". But yeah it is these traditions and smears of culture which gives India its special notion of diversity; and for sure they should be saved for future too; Not in a negat...

Heart-tugging tales, lovingly written.. worth a read

I read this book a long time ago and yet it never ceases to bring a warmth whenever I see the book in a bookshop or in someone's home. The love in his writing and the sensitivity maintained all times is admirable. One of those gently lovely books we all read and cherish for a long time. The story or intellectual insights might not be a strong feature of this book but the sensitivity to human emotions and lives is what makes this worth a read

    A Great Read

This book by Mr. Dalrymple is an amazing book in which he captures the lives of nine people each from different walks of life following a different religious path.

Through reading this book, one gets aware about some of the old traditions and practices of our country which are slowly getting lost in history. For someone who really appreciates the culture of this country and is keen to know about the same (without any bias), this book is a must read.

Thank you Mr. Dalrymple for writing suc...

    A highly readable work

A remarkable record of spirituality in today's India. The author, William Dalrymple, confines himself to probing the nine characters and letting them speak to you. What drives people to religion or spirituality in the India of today? How do they keep up the old traditions? All this is recorded in a narrative that holds your attention. One of the finest books i have read recently

    Nine Sacred Tales

I read the book a few months ago which caught my imagination repeatedly. It has brought me still closer to the traditions and arts which are slowly losing out in the din of modernity and affluence. I feel that we have lost the sense of smelling the soil where our roots are fixed. Such a loss of sensitivity is making us rootless.
All the nine lives shake my consciousness thoroughly. The way they are struggling to keep the culture live is heartening. The battle they are losing slowly and stead...

    A Must Read

Stark geographical conditions, different cultures, varying idologies and curious ways to attain but one aim - enlightenment or salvation. Beautifully written book, Nine Lives is 'Unheard-of India' and through the stories of nine determined souls, the author has sketched the theology on which the cultures and religions of both, past and present India, thrive.
