Doniger's book of books
One should read this book after he has finished author's magnificent earlier volume "The Hindus: An Alternative History" (Penguin), which chronicled the 3000 years of Hindu tradition. This excellent collection of thematically arranged connected essays has the same scholarly depth. Work of scholarship

Excellent book from one of the leading voices on Hinduism; I bow down to Doniger's wealth of knowledge and dedication to the religion. The relationship with one's religion is as personal and intimate as with the people of one's family. Knowing where the religions comes from, and the paths it has taken, is as essential as knowing the road on any long journey. And history is what was, not what we want it to be. I have read few pages but every thing is written with deep knowledge on the subject with references by the author , right wing elements can give negative rating to these kinds of book because it exposes the truth of hindu dharam and its philopsy on caste system , on women.
