  • Description

The Other Side Of Silence is a highly informative book by Urvashi Butalia that provides the readers with accurate facts about the Partition of India, which took place in the year 1947.

    Summary Of The Book

The Other Side Of Silence chronicles the series of events that took place during the Partition of India in 1947. This was a time of great strife in the country. Violence was rampant everywhere, and this caused severe unrest throughout the nation. It has been stated that about twelve million people were displaced during this period in history.

The atrocities committed against women during that time are also shocking. Studies have revealed that about seventy five thousand women were seized and raped during the partition. The author goes on to say that even though the public has managed to conceal the unrest and violence that took place at that time, all of it is still felt by the people as individuals. It has never been eliminated from their thoughts.

The author has conducted several research studies on the partition, and has used them in The Other Side Of Silence. Through this book, readers can get an accurate picture of the state of things at that time. People who were living in the nation back then also provide the readers with their testimonials in this book. Parliamentary documents have also been included here, along with memoirs and excerpts from diaries.

Silences that resonate within you..a must read

The Partition of India was the great price that the country paid for Freedom. It was a division that gave birth to a perpetual conflict between counties that were united not only through its boundaries but also through a bond of love and we feeling. Partition changed the lives of the people forever. It altered the future of not only the two newly formed countries of India and Pakistan but also profoundly and permanently changed the future course of the entire sun-continent. The are so many st...

Very Moving accounts of personal experiences

As a researcher and writer Urvashi stands out. The narration in the book is extremely moving and one comes in touch with the reality of "partition" through these accounts. When we read about the partition in history books, we hardly feel the pain that people may have gone through during those times because many things are abstracted away. One cannot help but shed tears on reading the first hand accounts presented in this book . Kudos to Urvashi for capturing the narrations so effectively.

    Pretty good

When I wrote this book twenty years ago, like many others in India, I was deeply concerned at what we saw as the rise of religion-based identity politics and the ways in which it was playing on imagined fears. Today, that moment seems almost as if it was a setting of the stage for a politics of upper caste, majoritarian domination. With a right-wing, statedly Hindu Government in power, one that wants to 'restore' India to an imagined 'former glory', these fears are no longer just fears, they a...
