The People's Scientist Dr. Y. Nayudamma A Biography - A Biography  (English, Paperback, K Chandrahas)

Padma Sri Dr. Y Nayudamma(1922-1985), a legend in his life time, put Indian leather on the world map. He was born in a remote village in Andhra Pradesh, India, began his official career as an Agricultural Demonstrator earning a monthly salary of Rs. 17. He went on to receive training in UK and pursued MS in the US and returned to India with a Ph. D. and a rich work experience.

As the Director of CLRI, Dr. Nayudamma worked for the welfare of the tanners by taking technology to their doorstep. In 1971, he became the  Director General of Scientific  and Industrial Research(DGSIR) and the innovations he introduced in CSIR are being talked of even today. In 1981, he assumed the charge as Vice Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University and served it with distinction. A visionary far ahead of his time, his sage counsel was sought by many developing countries and UN bodies. IN 1971, the nation conferred on him Padma Sri.

Dr. Nayudamma was killed in the Kanishka air crash in 1985 while returning home from Toronto.

The book captures the life and times of Y. Nayudamma - his humble beginnings, spectacular achievements as scientist-beuracrat, the vicissitudes of his personal life and his tragic death.
