  • Description
    R. Shankar has introduced major additions and updated key presentations in this second edition of Principles of Quantum Mechanics. New features of this innovative text include an entirely rewritten mathematical introduction, a discussion of Time-reversal invariance, and extensive coverage of a variety of path integrals and their applications. Additional highlights include: - Clear, accessible treatment of underlying mathematics - A review of Newtonian, Lagrangian, and Hamiltonian mechanics - Student understanding of quantum theory is enhanced by separate treatment of mathematical theorems and physical postulates - Unsurpassed coverage of path integrals and their relevance in contemporary physics The requisite text for advanced undergraduate- and graduate-level students, Principles of Quantum Mechanics, Second Edition is fully referenced and is supported by many exercises and solutions. The book's self-contained chapters also make it suitable for independent study as well as for courses in applied disciplines.

Great Book for even those with no background of Quantum Mechanics

Its a very good book. Book starts with a chapter on the basic mathematics reqd for understanding quantum mechanics. Then a little bit of classical mechanics to give students an idea of what necessitated the need for the quantum approach. After that, the real fun begins. The writing is very lucid and easy to understand.

To quote the author's words, its addressed to "students who are trying to learn the subject by themselves; that is to say, I made it as self-contained as possible, included a ...

Go straight for this book if you want to begin your studies in quantum physics

In one line, it is written for a self-learner trying to master quantum mechanics and if you have enough patience, go for it.
Shankar's Principles of Quantum Mechanics has everything a student needs to gain a deep understanding of the fundamentals, including an introduction to the math and notation used in upper-level university quantum mechanics courses, treatment of the uncertainty relations and their origins, angular momentum, the hydrogen atom, perturbation theory, scattering, corresponde...

    The Best Book on QM

Very few times you come across a book that has the reader in focus. Just started reading it and am impressed by the first few chapters. This seems to be the best self contained book on the topic. Written in a lucid conversational tone. Dont know why the Indian edition is not listed in flipkart

    Brilliant and Recommended

Its a brilliant book and is recommended by everyone. Its good for students who want to learn by themselves without taking any official courses of Quantum mechanics.
I think people have written enough about the book in the other reviews.
I want to write about the price. I didn't buy it from FLIPKART because they are selling it at expansive price.
I bought it from sapnaonline(dot)com and they sold me at 639/- in compared to (636+160)=796/- of Flipkart! Enjoy lads!

    Extremely helpful for independent learners!

This book is clearly written with independent learners in mind, so it is ideal for self-study. It starts with the pre-requisites and builds the concepts on that foundation.Skipping the initial chapters dealing with pre-requisites is NOT recommended, even when you think you have their knowledge. The reason being the enjoyable writing style of the book!

Yes, the concepts of quantum mechanics are somewhat difficult to grasp, but the maths is easier and QM is more fun!

An Elegant solution to a students perplexity in quantum mechanics

This is the best book on the subject for the beginner. It starts with an introduction to mathematics required to know QM, and i have never come across any books on QM which fills this gap.Although this is a difficult subject but Shankar has made this lucid and has given a profound understanding of the subject.I have read many books on QM and always got confused or left it due to the level of difficulty and none of the books provided such an in depth understanding of mathematics and QM.If you...

Excellent introduction to a difficult topic

Quantum Mechanics is a difficult topic to master, because its tenets go against our conventional notions of the definitiveness of observations. Shankar's book is a great resource to start learning this fascinating subject. The journey for the a learner has been cleverly crafted to impart necessary tools at the beginning, progressing gradually, drawing comparisons between Classical and Quantum Mechanics at important junctures and reinforcing important aspects of Quantum Mechanics at regular ...

    Awesome book

It's a good book for intermediate and advanced level learners. It's mostly theory so you will have to supplement it with a problems book too. Other than that, it's pretty cool. Flipkart delivery was fast too.

A very good introduction to Quantum Mechanics

I read this book after undergoing a course on Quantum Computation and found it to be logically agreeing with what I learned. This is the bes book on QM I have read. It does not introduce anything out of thin air but builds up a concrete formalism I did an independent study of QM through this book and found it to be very helpful Solve all the exercises given. I recommend it to any undergraduate/postgraduate student trying to understand QM.

    Excellent Book

I was prompted to buy the book as I had listened to the author's (Professor of Applied Physics, Yale University) fundamental physics classes as part of Yale Open Course. The book is excellent for a beginning in the subject. Though the maths required for the quantum physics is included in the book, for more clarity reading Basic Training in Mathematics by the same author is recommended.
