Description

Bicycle helmets protect the head from impact by reducing the rate at which the skull and brain accelerate or decelerate. Helmet works like a shock absorber. The intention is to crush the expanded polystyrene liner as soon as it is impacted, dissipating energy in a rapidly expanding cone-like area. The outer shell is designed to crack on impact to dissipate energy over the entire surface of the helmet. The foam layer then compresses and absorbs the bulk of the impact energy so that less energy is transferred to the head.
