Description
PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS Soil should be well-draining and loosened to a depth of 12 to 15 inches. Mix in a 2-4 inch layer of compost. Till soil well. Scatter turnip seed. Do not hide the seeds with more than ½ an inch of dirt. Once the seedlings are 4 inches high, thin the early types 2 to 4 inches apart and maincrop types to 6 inches apart. GROWING REQUIREMENTS WATERING Water at a rate of 1 litre per week to prevent the roots from becoming tough and bitter. PESTS Turnips are prone to get damaged from root maggots causing leaves to wilt, thereby affecting growth. The plant can also have chewed in leaves or sticky honeydew substance on them which causes leaves to turn pale yellow etc. The following pests attack this crop -Root Maggots, Flea Beetles, Powdery Mildew, Downy Mildew, Aphids. SOIL Turnips grow best in loamy soil with an ideal pH between 6.0 and 6.5 SPOT Select a site that gets full sun. TEMPERATURE Turnips grow best in temperatures from 4° to 24°C [40°F to 75°F]. HOW TO HARVEST Harvest some turnips very early as turnip greens. Harvest early types after about 5 weeks; main crop types after 6 to 10 weeks. Harvest turnips at any size you like. The modest, young turnips are nice and tender. Pull mature turnips before they get woody and before the first frost. Store for up to 3 or 4 months in a cool outdoor place.
