Spinach Is A Fast-Growing Leafy Crop And Needs A Good Sunny Site. It Can Tolerate Some Shade During The Sunniest Time Of Year And Indeed This Can Be Beneficial As It Helps To Reduce The Stress On The Plant During Hot, Dry Weather.
Soil Preparation: Spinach Grows Well In Any Fast-Draining Garden Loam. It Thrives In Soils With A Lot Of Organic Matter, As Long As They’Re Not Too Acidic. Incorporate 3” (8 Cm) Of Good Garden Compost Or Well-Aged Manure Into The Bed At Planting Time. Spinach Thrives In A Slightly More Alkaline Soil Than Most Vegetables (Ph 6.5-7.5). If Your Soil Is Acidic, Add Finely Crushed Eggshells, Ground Oyster Shell, Or Wood Ashes To Compensate.
Sowing: It Is Recommended To Either Sow As A Cluster The Seeds Would Germinate In 6 - 10 Days.
Harvest: Spinach Can Be Harvested In 45 - 60 Days And May Grow Up To 8 - 19 Inches.
Feeding: The Soil Can Be Enriched With Garden Compost Or Well-Rotted Manure. General Fertilizer, Such As 10-10-20, Or 18-6-12, Can Be Applied At 80 To 100 Grams Per Square Metre If The Soil Is Poor, But This Would Not Be Necessary If The Ground Has Been Well Fertilized For Previous Crops Such As Potatoes. Do Not Over-Feed Either As This Coarsens The Flavor.
Picking: Spinach Is Usually Picked By Pulling Off Individual Leaves, Working Evenly Along The Row. The Picking Can Start Quite Early When The Plants Are Only Ten Or Twelve Weeks Old And ‘Baby Leaves' Of Excellent Flavor Can Be Picked. The Constant Picking Of Leaves Helps To Reduce Bolting. Alternatively, Some Growers Prefer To Cut Away All The Leaves At Once And Allow Them To Re-Grow.
