These seeds have already been thoroughly cleaned and should be sown into a well-drained, sandy compost at any time of the year, and covered thinly with sand or grit and kept moist. Keep at between 20-25 degrees C. Seeds sometimes germinate within 6 to 8 weeks although some may take very much longer so please be patient. Plant out in the open ground in warmer countries or a large container elsewhere. Seed treatment before sowing may speed up germination. Care Instructions
Diospyros ebenum or Ebony wood produce a hard seed coat that prevents the seed from germinating readily. The coat protects the seed from early sprouting in the wild, when unseasonable winter warmth could cause a tender seedling to die. You can speed up nature and break the seed coating down by scarification either water or mechanical methods to weaken the hard outer coating without damaging the seed inside. Then seeds can be sown in river sand or any good seed sowing mix. Protect young plants from frost. Plant in full sun, add lots of compost, and mulch well. Water moderately. It is relatively pest-free. This tree is suitable to plant alongside rivers and dams on farms and game farms. It is also suitable for large estates and municipal parks. It tolerates temperatures ranging from about 4°C to 40°C.
