Description

This book is an attempt by the author to understand and explain the significance of the Shiva Linga.

Summary of the Book

There is a difference in opinion regarding the symbolism and stories of the Shiva Linga. Different religious practices associated with Lord Shiva are analyzed. He is revered across the world and is known to be fierce. The destroyer of the universe is one of the Holy Trinity of the Hindus. He wears animal skin and is smeared with ash. His hair is matted and piled neatly on his head. Shiva lives in Mount Kailash and millions of devotees worship him in the form of the Linga. The author unravels the mystery and meaning behind the aspects of Lord Shiva. He has put across two forms of the Lord: Shankara (the householder) and Shiva (the hermit). He makes us aware of why the Goddess converts the hermit into the householder. There are also details of the different schools of thoughts in Hinduism about sexual meaning of the phallic symbol. The Linga is believed to be sitting on the Yoni, the female reproductive organ.

Again a well written book by Dr. Devdutt pattanaik

The book throws a new light on the varying character of shiva and his way of seeing the world.
It describes Shiva neither as a villain nor as a hero. The book is well written and well researched.
It shows the relationship between Shiva and his consort beautifully. While Shiva loves Parvati he is inexpressive and Parvati knowing her husband though angry in situations is quick to forgive her husband who she knows is innocent in his actions.

Need improvisation of conents

I purchased this book and tried to finished it. I read the 1st week 7 secrets of Shiva and in continuation of this I made my next purchased. Although author seems to be a very knowledgeable person but still I feel that there is some issue with the connectivity of the thoughts in the book. I feels that if I might have written this book in Hindi, he would have better justified the contents.

There are many new things which I learn about mythology and I am happy that those things I learned from ...

Subjectivity over obejectivity

True to its name the book does explains the slow and often reluctant evolution of Shiva into Shankara, and the significance and meaning of the phallic symbol he is associated with. It starts with Narayana's act of consciousness that created Brahma who in turn led to the creation of Shiva, the fearful god of destruction, and follows his existence through the stages of being a recluse who comes out of his samadhi to help the gods destroy the demon city of Tripura to being an indifferent husband...

Crisp and to the point, but not worth the price

It should be a chapter in a bigger Hindu mythological book, but stand alone its not that great. Most facts are already known and there is little that surprises. Itn was interesting to read once, but not mesmerizing like "Jaya". It did not meet my expectations of "amazing and thrilling" insights about hindu culture. It left me even more confused and void about Shiva. I think the facts were presented but dots remained unconnected.

Justice hasn't been given to the Title of the book.

Having read 7 Secrets of Hindu Calendar Art of the author, I felt 2 basic things after reading this book:- (1) The subject matter for this title isn't enough in reality OR the author doesn't have enough material on the subject. (2) Instead of the title - "Shiva to Shankara - Decoding the Phallic Symbol" it should just be - "Shiva to Shankara"; as there isn't enough subject matter on "Decoding the Phallic Symbol".
Also another important point - a Hindu Mythology book with B&W images instead of...
