  • Description

A Short History Of Nearly Everything is one of Bill Bryson's most famous works that attempts to answer scientific questions in a simple yet engrossing manner for the layman's understanding. The book cruises through time and space to capture scientifically important stages of this Universe starting with the Big Bang till the rise of modern civilization.

    Summary Of The Book

Having been disappointed as a kid for never getting convincing answers to his questions by science textbooks or teachers, Bryson writes this bestseller as an account of his quest to understand the world and everything it contains. Unlike most science books that require prior groundwork in the subject, A Short History of Nearly Everything has been written keeping in mind the common man who wonders how the things, people and the world around him all came into being. With his lucid and humorous writing, Bryson makes complex science matters seem unambiguous and appealing.

The book has 6 sections that explore a far-reaching array of topics surrounding geology, evolution and quantum mechanics. Using stories of the greatest inventors like Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, Henry Cavendish and Edwin Hubble, the author crafts a compelling tale of science. The book first takes up the wonder that is the formation of this Universe and graphically describes concepts like the atomic and subatomic particles, and the size and shape of the Universe. It gradually moves on to inquire the development of homo sapiens and takes to explaining the biology of it.

The book leaves readers awe-stuck with all the fascinating facts about astonishing meteors and disastrous volcanic origins. The author also shares some comical anecdotes of great scientists and their eccentric acts. In the later part of the book, he discusses the modern scientific aspects about our planet's climate, the life and extinction of various other creatures and the increasing magnitudes of natural disasters. Ensuring utmost clarity and simplicity throughout the book, Bryson renders the most entertaining and absorbing story of the world of science.

A Short History Of Nearly Everything was published first in the year 2003 and became a bestselling science book. It won the Aventis Prize in 2004 and the EU Descartes Prize in 2005. It was also nominated for the Samuel Johnson Prize.

Great work by a writer!! It made me actually come online and review it!! (Which I never bothered to do before)

Have to say this....do not judge this book based on Abhi's review. This book is not an encyclopaedia. It is a short history. Just that.
Bill Bryson is a well known author known for his humorous and witty style of writing. In this book, he goes through a lot of information, trying to explain popular theories in diverse fields of science. It shows great curiosity on the part of the writer. Anyone one who reads this book will admit it is a huge task mainly because he is not aiming to put forth a...

    Absolutely fantastic

I have read thousands of books in my lifetime and this is one of the finest. Erudite, entertaining and over all a marvelous treat. Check out the reviews on Amazon for this book and you will understand what I mean. I am sorry that the several reviews have chosen to trash this book. It is their loss.
Many of my friends to whom I recommended this book also loved it tremendously.

a must read- if you are normal human made of cells (best for satiating curiosity)

I was not willing to write anything ( some microbes evolved lazy),but I am forced to, as one of the comment below has called this book insane.

and I will not tell about the fun of reading it,that's up to you how much your brain enjoy it.
here have the glimpses of it..........

Phosphor was accidentally discovered when a scientist tried to turn human urine into gold. The similarity in colour seemed to have been a factor in his conviction that this was possible.

according to e=mc2 If you ar...

This book makes you feel ashamed and worthless

Wow....hoof....Phew.... what was this guy taking when he wrote this. Better than all the scientists mentioned in there and way beyond what you would expect it to be. Why is this thing not taught at school? Why was I not taught by people like him? It makes you feel like going back to school and really blurt out obscenities at your teachers. The people whom I used to bow to every morning in respect at school were really a bunch of losers who simply were not teachers but just some employees want...

Great book for a general overview of Science

First, I would like readers to ignore the negative review by 'Abhi' (http://www.flipkart.com/reviews/RV65ZC7BS1CZ8ITUZ). He focuses on the little factual errors in the book, shooting down a great writing by an excellent author.

You are not supposed to be a science expert after reading this book, but to appreciate the beautiful panorama called 'Science'. Well worth the money. If possible get the hardcover edition for some excellent pictures.

Very insightful and informative. Interesting read. Lots of topics are covered.

This book is about life and many facts and deductions based on our understanding of the planet earth, fossils and progress in various sciences. Chapters on meteors and bacteria tell us how susceptible we as humans are and how fickle and how miraculous it is that we are alive. Seems billions of species have come up and gone extinct over billions of years.
Then there are some hilarious and little known facts about famous scientists and explorers.
The sheer expanse of the book is awesome.

Abhi's comment is misleading and should be REMOVED

    Hi Flipkart,

I would appreciate if you can remove Abhi's comment (http://www.flipkart.com/reviews/RV65ZC7BS1CZ8ITUZ). It is totally misleading and it seems the reader was more interested in fact checking than actually reading the book.

    1) Bill Bryson is a travel author with little or no science background
    2) He makes it clear on the very first page that he is attempting to explain science specifically for the layman
    3) The book is a not supposed to be read as an encyclopedia but rather as a...
