  • Description

Stoner is a classic penned down by renowned American author, John Williams. It is considered to be one of the greatest forgotten novels of the past century.

    Summary of the Book

Stoner follows the life of William Stoner, who is a rugged farm boy from Missouri. His parents send him to college to major in agriculture, but a seminar on English literature blows him away and changes his life forever. He changes his major to literature and this was the first decision he made based upon his dreams and aspirations. Stoner becomes an English teacher, but is disheartened and devastated by the politics going on in the English Department. Although he is a prolific English professor, Stoner struggles to make his presence felt. He marries the wrong woman, who attempts to isolate him from the affections of their only child. His life is quiet and dull and none of his colleagues remember him after his death. Stoner is a narrative of the various conflicts, defeats and victories of the human race that pass unrecorded and uncovers the significance of an individual life. This book will make for a riveting and engaging read.

Glad I finally read this one

Stunningly simple. Achingly sad. The best ever interpretation of the saying - Every man fights battles no one knows about. Brilliantly puts across the fact that no one’s life is too small or insignificant. Loved every word of it. Only regret is it took me so long to discover this gem!

Thank you Flipkart for delivering this book three days earlier than the intimated date! The guys from Ekart were very courteous. And thank you for the SMS service that kept me updated about the order.

Splendid use of language and simplicity

The book, as its cover says, is about a man who grew up on a farm and his life as a professor in a university. It is just that and yet there is something special about the manner in which this story has been written.
The man's experiences and relationships with those around him draw you in. You need not have any idea of what a teacher's life is, or what it means to live and grow close to the earth and still, you are able to relate to him and the other characters in the book. The emotions the...

    The Perfect Novel

Morris Dickstein of The New York Times called "Stoner" the perfect novel. I tend to agree. It starts off slow. At first I wondered what the fuss was about. But gradually, as I got going, I discovered what so many have found in this novel. It is beautiful. At 288 pages it is a taut piece of work, contrasting favouraby with the sagging plot of my favourite novel, "A Suitable Boy".

This novel was published in the United States in 1965 by John Williams, a professor of English at the University o...
