  • Description
The book is an attempt to unravel the trajectories of silence and dominance in the cultural landscape of the tea gardens situated in the frontier state of Assam. Built on the virgin forest land of Assam and conquering the hidden treasures of nature, the tea garden symbolizes the essence of the garden from an Edenic perspective at first sight, but from a deeper angle, it showcases the systematic manipulation of the poor labourers for the enrichment of a few agency houses based in Calcutta and London. The tea garden was the mini-world where various forms of cultural practices took place through verbal communications and social customs. The distance between the workers’ quarters and the colonial bungalows portrays the unequal power structure. The tea gardens also highlight the centre of protests. The representation of the subjugated women labourers is explained in the book. Overall, the book attempts to locate the varied interests and contents of the people of thetea garden society from a newer perspective.
