  • Description

The book is a collection of prize-winning essays on public debate and intellectual pluralism in Indian history.

    Summary Of The Book

Basing The Argumentative Indian: Writings on Indian History, Culture And Identity in as simple a tradition as Calcutta’s ‘addas’ or a gathering of people at street corners to discuss everything from politics to cricket, Amartya Sen explains that this spirit of discussion is deeply ingrained within the people of India. And it is this healthy expression of opinions, debates and discussions which involves India’s many ethnic groups, opines Sen, that will lead to the success of democracy and the downplaying of India's caste system and inequalities. He goes on to say that this acceptance, personal modification and rejection of another’s views is what makes Indians liberal in contradiction to the general view that it is a product of Western influence. In actuality, he says, Indians have a unique quality where they assimilate ideas from Western culture into their own.

Extensive is what one would say about the The Argumentative Indian: Writings on Indian History, Culture And Identity, where Sen talks of Rabindranath Tagore and Satyajit Ray in his essays and how they are examples of liberal Indias. He openly challenges many widely held beliefs about Indians, like the belief that human rights are inherently Western concepts, and he does so with finesse and with a barrage of examples from old and modern India. He expresses many of his own views while politely arguing with the opinions put forth by influential people worldwide. The fact that he takes his readers through a variety of examples to prove his points is one of the book’s most interesting features.
What has to be said about the book is that it breaks away from the usual perceptions that both Westerners and Indian people have and provides readers with a new way of looking at India.

Fantastic overview of the intellectual heritage of India.

I had ordered this book a year back and it took me almost a year to finish it. That is to say, this is not an easy read , especially if you are acquainted with modern books that are easy on the readers intellect and time. This is a book that will require you to pause, think , turn back a few pages, make connections and then visualise the grand idea presented with a grand vision.

This book is not a bedtime read. So a somewhat familiarity with philosophy or cultural studies would be very helpf...

One of the most amazing works by Sen

The book starts with a historical backdrop of Indian culture. It is a collection of his wonderful essays on India, given as lectures or published as chapters/ papers in different places. However, the connection is very nicely captured in this book. For example, the history of arguments between Tagore and Gandhi, the recent history of the government to change the history of India in the school textbooks or the reasoning about the skewed male-female ratios in different states of India has been ...

India and her culture - Amartya Sen at his most eloquent

The book is a collection of essays on contemporary India, its plurality, culture and argumentative tradition, written by author over a period of time. All of the essays bear the hallmarks of author's authoritative scholarly range over such topics as social economic theory, ethics and political philosophy, welfare economics, development economics, public health, and gender studies. These essays are part academic study, but is often enlivened by (eg: essay on Tagore, Satyajit Ray) his personal...

    Phenomenal analysis by Sen

Asking questions is important, yes! asking the impartial ones I guess, that is all Sen's work is about. I was never much aware of India's intellectual hertiage or for that matter, India's record in spirituality. Sen's thorough examination of India's past, stereotypes-then and now makes it a wonderful read, especially to anyone who's interested of India's present societal structure as well as the mystic land India is or has become one.

    Review of "The Argumentative Indian"

Argumentative Indian is a masterpiece on skepticism of Indian culture and tradition which was narrated by the Nobel prize winner in a striking manner. It also deals with the traditional history of Indian over two and half millennia. There is a lot of controversy over the religions that were born in India and the religions that came into India due to the Foreign invasions and Amartya Sen has given a complete cognition in a precise manner that is acceptable by all Indians. Amartya Sen has give...

Great Reading ! A must for Every Indian.

The books deals Indian History & Culture in the perspective in which the emphasis has been given on highlighting the secular contribution like science , mathematics, astronomy ,literature etc of India to the world and stand taken by Indian Intellectuals vis a vis their counterparts in the world on these subject across the ages . It has tried to change the paradigm of western way of looking at India where it is primarily perceived as a land of Spiritualism & Mysticism and instead the book ha...

    Very thorough

I was a little skeptical of whether I would find this interesting. Not being a non fiction reader for most part of my life, I thought I was taking a gamble. Well, this was a gamble that paid off. It is a very very good book that requires a little patience to read through. Although I would like a word against Mr. Sen for sticking on to "Hindu Extremism" for quite a while during the first few chapters which probably required deeper investigation.

However, apart from that very minute lapse, I ...
