  • Description

The Golden Gate is Vikram Seth's debut novel that delves into the lives of a group of yuppies from San Francisco.

    Summary of the Book

The Golden Gate is a novel in verse, which contains five hundred and ninety Onegin stanzas. These stanzas are sonnets written in iambic tetrameter. The story is set in the 1980s, based on the lives of yuppies who lived in San Francisco at that point in time. They were upper middle class young people either in their 20s or 30s. The word yuppie actually describes a young urban professional. The yuppies were ambitious people, who were in constant search of love, success and adventure. Vikram Seth does a brilliant job of emphasizing their emotions and ambitions. The Golden Gate has also been adapted into an opera, for which the music is composed by Conrad Cummings. Vikram Seth won several awards and accolades for this novel, including the Sahitya Akademi Award for English in 1988.
