  • Description

Written by one of the most credible, accomplished, and sophisticated thinkers of modern times, this is a compelling read about the highly engaging concept of social justice, and combines the notion of human well-being with economic reasoning.

    Summary Of The Book

Justice has multiple dimensions and cannot be defined as or decided upon in singular terms. It can mean different things to different people in different instances. It is, in simple words, understood as existing and varying on a continuum. This is the central aspect of the Nobel laureate Amartya Sen’s book, The Idea Of Justice.

This remarkable book by the distinguished economist questions the very notion of social justice being a far-fetched ideal or an achievable and practical possibility. The book defines a perfectly just society and also traces the concept of social justice as understood by philosophers and thinkers over ages. People have continued to face differences in opinions regarding what is just and what is not, and the book places special emphasis on the alternative and comparative perspectives on justice.

The author has introduced an approach to justice followed by the demands of justice, materials of justice, forms of reasoning, and public reasoning and democracy. Within the four parts the book has been divided into are chapters covering endlessly thought-provoking topics.

This book, published in 2009, is dedicated to the memory of one of Amartya Sen’s teachers, named John Rawls. Rawls wrote a book titled A Theory Of Justice, from which Sen has picked up arguments and provided a detailed evaluation of these compelling arguments. Sen has discussed the positions of justice and the situation of original position as highlighted by Rawls in his book.

This is a monumental work is a must-read for all who wish to stir their thoughts and re-think, especially in present times when the world is quivering with questions related to global justice and fairness. A masterful text, this book provides an insight into what can make societies more just rather than making it seem like an endeavour towards a mere utopian dream.

    Worth reading

Obviously , its not pastime material like books of Chetan bhagat ( even i hv already read all books of chetan ) , but one needs to be really interested in history and philosophy before even trying to pick up this book . There are some high-end academic terminology , but still one can make out the idea without those things also . Worth reading and please read slowly .... for letting the idaes get though your system :)

You will need patience and a dictionary.

This is not your average book. This is in no ways easy to read. You will need patience and a dictionary to be able to read to it.
Amartya Sen shares his collective wisdom on Justice, social and economic equalities and sheds light on subjective morality.
Also, before you pick this one up try his other famous book The Argumentative Indian.

    A serious and academic book

I bought this book after reading Argumentative Indian, but I found this book to be too serious and academic. I suggest this book only to those who have an academic interest or background about areas related to justice, and certainly not for those who are interested to gain a general insight to this topic.

    A splendid read!

The language of the book is really praiseworthy. It's not very hard but it is as articulate as is necessary to make it sound beautiful. As to the content, every line makes sense which is why it's not very easy to maintain a fast pace of reading. But I still think everyone should read it, even if it does appear to be a little difficult at first. In an age of social media where everyone seems to have an opinion whether they have full knowledge of the situation or not, it is necessary to read su...
