  • Description
In this frank and damning expose of the Teresa cult, Hitchens details the nature and limits of one woman's mission to help the world's poor. He probes the source of the heroic status bestowed upon an Albanian nun whose only declared wish was to serve God. He asks whether Mother Teresa's good works answered any higher purpose than the need of the world's privileged to see someone, somewhere, doing something for the Third World. He unmasks pseudo-miracles, questions Mother Teresa's fitness to adjudicate on matters of sex and reproduction, and reports on a version of saintly ubiquity which affords genial relations with dictators, corrupt tycoons and convicted frauds. Is Mother Teresa merely an essential salve to the conscience of the rich West, or an expert PR machine for the Catholic Church? In its caustic iconoclasm and unsparing wit, The Missionary Position showcases the devastating effect of Hitchens' writing at its polemical best.

    Must read book

Mother Theresa is just one example of missionaries who obfuscate their religious beliefs through charity.

I have been a great fan of Hitchens. Unlike cowardly Indian intellectuals Hitchen completly destroys the image of this lady,

The truth under the saintly veneer, it is also a much needed expose of the Roman Catholic Church.

A most needed book in India. Unfortunately and predictably it has not been taken note of by anyone in the mainstream media. Typical of Indian Secularism where I got kicked out of a meeting of secularists for reading out from Thomas Paine's Age of Reason
"Whenever we read the obscene stories, the voluptuous debaucheries, the cruel and torturous executions, the unrelenting vindictiveness, with which more than half the Bible is filled, it would be more consistent that we called it the word of a ...

Always thought she was a crook!!

I always thought she was a crook but Hitchens just gave me evidence. I knew that there is nothing called MIRACLE and all that halo that was constructed around her or for that matter of fact any other religious guru is just fake.

She was worse. Other gurus take money and live luxuriously. Some of them construct free hospitals for the poor and build infrastructure where they live( for example- Satya Sai of Puttaparthi). This woman took all the money and literally is responsible for the death ...

After reading this book it's not looking good for Teresa.

Christopher Hitchens once again beats some sense into our moderate brain. His writing style, thought is perfectly preserved in this book. Stories about missionaries are always sugar coated before it reaches the public's ears. Hitchens cracks the coating and brings them to light. "A person's reputation should be based on their words and actions and not the other way around", as Hitchens states in the book. The book is perfect in every sense: literary, intellectual and moral. A definite must re...

    Just wow!

It is a eye opener for those who believed Mother Teresa really deserved the Nobel Peace Prize,
All her dirty secrets are enlisted within this wonderful book.
Author Christopher Hitchens has not deviated from his blunt and witty manner of presenting facts.

    A must read.
