Description

The Shining is a book published in the year 1977, revolving around the Torrance family and their hair-raising experiences at the Overlook Hotel, which is located in a secluded area.

Summary Of The Book

The Shining was considered one of the turning points of Stephen King’s career.

The story revolves around the Torrance family. Jack Torrance is one of the lead characters of the novel, who desires to become an author so as to repair his career and married life, which was destroyed due to his bad temper as well as alcohol addiction. He lost his job, marriage, and even broke his child’s hand in a fit of violent rage.

One day, Jack was offered a job as a caretaker at the Overlook Hotel, which was located in a completely secluded area. He gladly decided to take the job, as he thought that being secluded would help him reconcile with his family in the near future.

However, things begin to take a turn when their 5-year-old son begins to unravel the mysteries of the hotel’s past, which are previously not known to them. This leads to a series of events, which aim at taking the lives of the entire family, unless something is done about this.

The plot of this book was also adapted in a movie named The Shining, released in 1980, followed by a TV series, which went on air in the year 1997.

About Stephen King

The author of this book, Stephen King, is also a well-known movie director, producer, and actor, whose books are mostly centred on the themes of horror, fantasy, and suspense.

Some of the notable books published by the author include The Dark Tower: The Wind through the Keyhole, It: The 25th Anniversary Special Edition, and Salem’s Lot: Illustrated Edition. These books have earned a great deal of recognition and respect for the author all over the world.

The author attributes his success as a writer to the fact that he sets aside time to write a minimum of 2000 words each day. He firmly believes that if an individual cannot set aside 4-6 hours daily for the purpose of reading and writing, he/she cannot be a successful writer. The author notes that Richard Matheson is the writer whose work has had the greatest impact on him. The author completed his studies from Durham Elementary School and Lisbon Falls High School. He completed his graduation from the University of Maine, studying English. After completing his degree, the author was unable to find a decent teaching job, regardless of the fact that he was a certified teacher. This made him contribute short articles to a number of magazines for men. In the latter part of the year 1971, he finally received a teaching job at Hampden Academy, Maine. The author currently has three homes that are occupied by him and his spouse. The author has three children and the same number of grandchildren.

Amazing book

Stephen King's classic is one of his best. He never fails
to surprise me. His imagery and blood-pumping story in The
Shining kept me in a trance until I read the last page. A
great book for any one looking for a thrill.

Also, I must say, Flipkart is the best site for online purchases in terms of service :)

TRULY A KING

In all sense a crossroad novel for Stephen King.
A masterpiece which shows how horror genre should be dealt with.

KING at his very best. I recommend this to everyone who has read Stephen King before --- and others you will start liking his books after this one (I personally guarantee it)

Started the wait for sequel "DR Sleep" which hits next year.

King of Horror

Flipkart service was awesome as always.

Regarding the book , well I have only 2 words :

Horror .... personified.

It is surely one of the most powerful horror novels ever written .... the dreams , the abnormal reality , the descriptions of evil , the thoughts , the dread , the silence , the terror

One of Stephen King's Best

He is the most widely adopted novelist in cinema, and you can see why. The Shining was written when King himself had undergone a depression-induced phase of alcoholism. What a wonderful job he does of channeling his thoughts into this book in the form of the protagonist, Jack Torrance, who is driven to murder by the hotel he is supposed to take care of for six months. A must read for all fans of horror.

LACKS PACE BUT DEFINITELY SCARY

The Shining was the first book I read by Stephen King, and on reading the first 150 pages one is tempted to keep the book away; it's so boring. But after 150 pages the story catches a decent pace and manages to scare you. Recommended to read when alone ;)
