  • Description
Fully illustrated and beautifully designed, this is a unique and wonderfully creepy tale that is sure to delight Murakami fans. 'All I did was go to the library to borrow some books'. On his way home from school, the young narrator of The Strange Library finds himself wondering how taxes were collected in the Ottoman Empire. He pops into the local library to see if it has a book on the subject. This is his first mistake. Led to a special 'reading room' in a maze under the library by a strange old man, he finds himself imprisoned with only a sheep man, who makes excellent donuts, and a girl, who can talk with her hands, for company. His mother will be worrying why he hasn't returned in time for dinner and the old man seems to have an appetite for eating small boy's brains. How will he escape? Author Info
    • In 1978, Haruki Murakami was twenty-nine and running a jazz bar in downtown Tokyo. One April day, the impulse to write a novel came to him suddenly while watching a baseball game. That first novel, Hear the Wind Sing, won a new writers' award and was published the following year. More followed, including A Wild Sheep Chase and Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, but it was Norwegian Wood, published in 1987, that turned Murakami from a writer into a phenomenon. In works such as The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, 1Q84, What I Talk About When I Talk About Running and Men Without Women, Murakami's distinctive blend of the mysterious and the everyday, of melancholy and humour, continues to enchant readers, ensuring his place as one of the world's most acclaimed and well-loved writers.

    It was everything and nothing

The book opened up to me safe in the knowledge that I would not chew the paper but just chew through the words slowly. My eyes devoured the lovely illustrations and the dream like world created by Murakami. My younger sister finished the book in under 30 minutes - it took me an hour and a half.

This was supposed to be a children's book but deep down inside aren't we all just children? If you've never read Murakami and want a taster - this is perfect.

    A beauty worth reading

If you have read Murakami, you have probably come to expect stories with deep insight about life from him. Well, this sis quite the opposite. The book was written with children in mind specifically and is gorgeous to boot. Deeply philosophical at the nonsensical level, yet a fascinating read.
If you remotely like children's books that are actually deep and leave an impression (Alice in Wonderland, anyone?), this one is not to be missed

    Beautiful and Surreal

It's Murakami... Beautiful and Surreal.. The story itself is weird and wonderful in true Murakami fashion. Set in a library, it is part horror story, part fairy tale. READ IT !!
