Description

This is one of the oldest textbooks on chemical engineering that is still in use in undergraduate courses.

Summary Of The Book

In complex engineering processes, the whole process is broken down into unit operations so that they can be analyzed individually. A unit operation is any single part of a multi-step process that can be considered a separate function by itself.

The book starts with an introduction covering principles and definitions related to unit operations. It then divides the unit operations in chemical engineering into four major groups - Fluid Mechanics, Heat Transfer and Its Applications, Mass Transfer and Its Applications, and Operations Involving Particulate Solids.

The Fluid Mechanics section covers fluid flow phenomena, basic equations of fluid flow, fluid statics and its applications, flow of compressible fluids, incompressible flow in pipes and channels, flow past immersed objects, transporting and metering of fluids, and agitation and mixing of liquids.

The Heat Transfer section covers principles of heat flow in fluids, heat transfer by conduction, heat transfer to fluids with and without phase change, radiation heat transfer, heat-exchange equipment, and evaporation.

Mass Transfer section covers principles of diffusion and mass transfer between phases, gas absorption, humidification operations, equilibrium-stage operations, distillation, introduction to multicomponent distillation, leaching and extraction, drying of solids, fixed-bed separations, membrane separation processes, and crystallization.

The last section covers properties and handling of particulate solids and mechanical separation.

This is followed by an extensive appendix section containing nineteen appendices. These include conversion factors and constants of nature, dimensionless groups, dimensions, capacities and weights of standard steel pipe, Tyler standard screen scale etc.

About The Authors

Warren L. McCabe was a highly respected professor and an author.

He wrote the Unit Operations of Chemical Engineering which was first published in the 1950s.

Warren L. McCabe had a distinguished career as an academic, first in the faculty of the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn and then in the Department of Chemical Engineering at North Carolina State University. He was considered a pioneer in the field of chemical engineering.

Peter Harriott had a distinguished career as an academic for nearly fifty years.

Peter Harriott was born in 1927. He graduated from Cornell University with a degree in chemical engineering, then earned his Sc.D from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He worked for General Electric and later joined the Cornell University faculty. He designed new courses and has guided several M.S. and Ph.D students.

Julian C. Smith has co-authored Unit Operations of Chemical Engineering with Peter Harriott .
