  • Description
I don't understand it; I don't in the least understand why men can't live without wars. How is it that we women don't want anything of the kind, don't need it?Tolstoy's epic masterpiece intertwines the lives of private and public individuals during the time of the Napoleonic wars and the French invasion of Russia. The fortunes of the Rostovs and the Bolkonskys, of Pierre, Natasha, and Andrei, are intimately connected with the national history that is played out in parallel with their lives. Balls and soirees alternate with councils of war and the machinations of statesmen and generals, scenes of violent battles with everyday human passions in a work whose extraordinary imaginative power has never been surpassed. The prodigious cast of characters, both great and small, seem to act and move as if connected by threads of destiny as the novel relentlessly questions ideas of free will, fate, and providence. Yet Tolstoy's portrayal of marital relations and scenes of domesticity is as truthful and poignant as the grand themes that underlie them. In this definitive and highly acclaimed Maude translation, Tolstoy's genius and the power of his prose are made newly available to the contemporary reader. In addition this edition includes a new introduction by Amy Mandelker, revised and expanded notes, lists of fictional and historical characters, a chronology of historical events, five maps, and Tolstoy's essay 'Some Words about War and Peace'.

    why do they need this

now i won't actually write a review on war and peace simply because i don't consider myself qualified for that (my last name is not nabokov). I read war and peace nearly a year ago and i spent 6 months* reading it which wasn't that much when you consider that tolstoy spent 6 years writing it and this was only due to the intriguing ways in which tolstoy analyses the human heart which can left you spell bound if u are actually reading it(plz don't read this for improving your english and it won...

    Simply awesome

I was seeking work which deeply deals with more with philosophical aspects and I must say I have found (I haven't read many works yet). I'm presently about 1/6 of the pages in and it is as if I'm living in that time, I'm a part of it.
    Read it.

    Alert on the translation

Please read the review by Adam Thirlwell in the Guardian, publihshed on 8 October 2005, also available online, before you decide to buy this translation of War and Peace by Anthony Briggs. Though I do not have the credentials or the capacity to write a review of the book itself, or its translation, I would like to point out that the translator has blunted the language, and has diluted to a considerable extent the irony and detail best read in translations true to Tolstoy's style. The Wordswor...

    Fabulous!

The book is amazing and it's worth of buying. It's a must read book. It tells a lot about 1805's Napoleon entry in Russia and the terrorism back then. Must buy it

"â??"I was then wiser and had more insight than at any other time, and understood all that is worth understanding in life, because...because I was happy."

Words cannot do justice to the words of Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace.

War and Peace is not simply a novel that speaks of these juxtaposed states, but of human existance. It is populated by characters of each and every kind fathomable, whom we seem to know as intimately and closely as ourselves.

Personally, I was most affected by the cha...

Greatest Novel that is and can be - a fact attested by many literary figures. Better Translations exist.

Many people on reading or hearing or just looking at this towering work would feel awestruck and say - what can we, mere mortals, say about this novel! its a work of genius! written by a genius!

But that would be going against the very philosophy that Tolstoy expounds in this work. One of his primary line of attack is against the so called men of genius and through this book he successfully dispels the myth of "Men of Genius". in a blow by blow analysis he shows that the men who are portray...

    awesome

A very good read, an epic, however I wouldn't suggest this book as it's font size is quite small, It's still a very good read though.
Tolstoy's marvelous work, no wonder why people call it the greatest literature ever written.
