  • Description
The first thorough study of the co-existence of crime and democratic processes in Indian politics. In India, the world's largest democracy, the symbiotic relationship between crime and politics raises complex questions. For instance, how can free and fair democratic elections exist alongside rampant criminality? Why do political parties actively recruit candidates with reputations for wrongdoing? Why do voters elect (and even re-elect) them - to the point that a third of state and national legislators assume office with pending criminal charges? In this eye-opening book, political scientist Milan Vaishnav takes readers deep into the marketplace for criminal politicians by drawing on fieldwork on the campaign trail, large surveys, and an original database on politicians' backgrounds.

    Delightful

Gives reader a proper insight on criminalization of politics in india
The power of money and muscle in politics and the social and economic cause of criminals entering politics
It also brings into light the failure of the state to provide basic amenities to its citizens and how this failure leads to criminals entering politics..
Overall a good book to read with proper graphical representation......

    Moderate

An exercise in futility. This book simply narrates what almost everyone already knows. Journalists have already offered such explanations of 'crime' in Indian politics. The book is a typical sad and unexciting example of 'American' political science. The only good it has done is that it has earned quite a few bucks for the author. And that's what counts,at the end of the day.
