  • Description
In Why I Am a Hindu, one of India?s finest public intellectuals gives us a profound book about one of the world?s oldest and greatest religions. Starting with a close examination of his own belief in Hinduism, he ranges far and wide in his study of the faith. He talks about the Great Souls of Hinduism, Adi Shankara, Patanjali, Ramanuja, Swami Vivekananda, Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and many others who made major contributions to the essence of Hinduism. He delves deep into Hinduism?s most important schools of thought (such as the Advaita Vedanta). He explains, in easily accessible language, important aspects and concepts of Hindu philosophy like the Purusharthas and Bhakti, masterfully summarizes the lessons of the Gita and Vivekananda?s ecumenism and explores with sympathy the ?Hinduism of habit? practised by ordinary believers. He looks at the myriad manifestations of political Hinduism in the modern era, including violence committed in the name of the faith by right-wing organizations and their adherents. He analyses Hindutva, explains its rise and dwells at length on the philosophy of Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, its most significant ideologue. He is unsparing in his criticism of extremist ?bhakts? and unequivocal in his belief that everything that makes India a great and distinctive culture and country will be imperilled if religious ?fundamentalists? are allowed to take the upper hand. However, he also makes the point that it is precisely because Hindus form the majority that India has survived as a plural, secular democracy.A book that will be read and debated now and in the future, Why I Am a Hindu is a revelatory and original masterwork.

    Worth the money

Eventhough I disagree with the views of Dr Tharoor this book is a must read. He narrates the surge of Hindutva politics and carefully analyses the Hindutva theories of Veer Savarkar and M.S Golvalkar aka Guruji. The ideology of RSS has been analysed and his definition of Hindutva is also shared through this book. I feel that he is bit more cautious about his views becoz being a congress leader he has a lot of limitation in going deep into the contribution of Sangh to Hindu society.

    Nice

This book is well written like all of Tharoor's books. The first half of the book is about our ancient traditions and evolution of our relegion and philosophy. The Second half is a detailed history of the Hindutva movement starting from Hindu Mahasabha, RSS, Janasangh, and BJP and how they succeeded in dividing the people of this country. But the most surprising thing is that there is not a single word about Congress which ruled for over 60 years when more scams and atrocities were encourag...

    Great product

Why I Am A Hindu is a well-researched exposition and is yet a charming personal account -- and it floats seamlessly in rich prose and diction synonymous with one of the most widely-read and revered authors of our times.

The book is divided into THREE SECTIONS:

The first of which is titled My Hinduism

The Second section is titled Political Hinduism and this is where Hindutva comes into play.

And The Third Part is all about the Politics of Division.

    Really Nice

Shashitharoor view was a good think idea of correct pathway .it was a really nice attitude entry of correct perspective of hindu religions. But today conditions always very difficult mainly petrol diesal jet fuels hike day to day life otherwise vegetables, LPG gas price 17 times hike between 2014 to 2018 this day so middle class people so hungry destroy living each day but election time Hindutwa caste vote bank secure hidden agenda applicable ...

    Must buy!

There has always been a great desire to understand Hinduism through varied assumptions and interpretations. WHY I AM A HINDU by Shashi Tharoor offers a completely different and authentic perspective of the eternal religion and its traditions, of its origins which lie beyond human history, and its truths which have been passed down through the ages to the present day.

In the milieu of the emerging national narrative, he writes about the challenges confronting Hinduism, as opposed to his own c...
