BY THE NOBEL PRIZE-WINNING ECONOMISTS DARON ACEMOGLU & JAMES A. ROBINSON Shortlisted for the Financial Times Business Book of the Year AwardWhy are some nations more prosperous than others? Why Nations Fail sets out to answer this question, with a compelling and elegantly argued new theory: that it is not down to climate, geography or culture, but because of institutions. Drawing on an extraordinary range of contemporary and historical examples, from ancient Rome through the Tudors to modern-day China, leading academics Daron Acemoglu and James A. Robinson show that to invest and prosper, people need to know that if they work hard, they can make money and actually keep it - and this means sound institutions that allow virtuous circles of innovation, expansion and peace.Based on fifteen years of research, and answering the competing arguments of authors ranging from Max Weber to Jeffrey Sachs and Jared Diamond, Acemoglu and Robinson step boldly into the territory of Francis Fukuyama and Ian Morris. They blend economics, politics, history and current affairs to provide a new, powerful and persuasive way of understanding wealth and poverty.

Good analyses of why nations fail.

"Countries need inclusive economic and political institutions to break out of the cycle of poverty" is the authors' answer to "Why Nations Fail". It is a remarkably well researched book in an attempt to find an answer to the vexed question around sustained development. The authors provide historical evidence across the globe and across centuries to demonstrate that "extractive" political and economic institutions are primarily responsible for sustaining misery and poverty. They advocate inclu...

    Fail proof

Why nations fail is a topic which has been dissected in many books in recent years. This book examines each theory under the lens of history and proceeds to propose a new one. Writers duo have argued that institutional strength determines the longevity of state.Case is well argued and has lot of good examples. He has examined rise of China amongst emerging economies and has put some stratling predictions.Wish that he had done for India too.Suming up, great work.

    Why Nations Fail

So the gist of the book is that it gives very strong reasons and arguments as to why some nations happen to be prosperous compared to others. It definitely a good book to read for someone who is interested in economics especially state economics and politics but at the same time I feel that the reader does not need to have detailed knowledge about the subject. The language easy going and not too demanding of your vocabulary. The only slight disappointment of this book is that it does not contain...

Surprisingly a light and insightful read

In a nutshell : Hats off to the authors for compiling such an easy to understand, yet insightful and gripping piece of work.

    Product Review :
An extremely insightful read on the affairs of the human settlements globally as seen with passage of time since the establishment of agrarian eco-system to today, which have contributed heavily to the divide between the prosperous and poor segments of the population.
I do not have a background in economics or in political-science, the two directions t...
