Description
Set in 1878 when India was under the reel of British Empire. Antarmahal paints the life of Bhubaneshwar Chowdhury's (Jackie Shroff) obsession for an heir and desire for power. Terrified that his growing age will prevent him from fathering a son, he casts away his beautiful wife of 12 years, Mahamaya (Rupa Ganguly) and marries the very young and vulnerable Jasomati (Soha Ali Khan). Bhubaneshwar aims to augment his power in the British hierarchy with a unique celebration of Durga Puja... sculpt the goddess in the image of Queen Victoria. Brijbhushan (Abhishek Bachchan) enters Antarmahal to sculpt the goddess but is struck by the tragic plight of Jasomati... In a vortex that begins to spin out of control. Antarmahal tells the story about the lengths to which superstition and despair will drive a man.

WOW! What a film!

An absolutely mindblowing film. Admitedly, not everyone's cup of teac, but a brilliant film, nonetheless. Rituparno Ghosh has got amazing performances from all his actors : Jackie Shroff, Abhishekh Bacchan, Raima Sen and Soha Ali Khan. Set in 1800s Bengal, the story presents the seamier side of Brahmanical insiduousness and presents it to us in an understated but nonetheless terrifying manner. Definitely a film for the serious cineaste.
