  • Description

At 4 p.m. on a hazy November afternoon in Rangoon, 1862, a shrouded corpse was escorted by a small group of British soldiers to an anonymous grave in a prison enclosure. As the British Commissioner in charge insisted, 'No vestige should remain to distinguish where the last of the Great Moghuls rests.' Bahadur Shah Zafar II, the last Mughal Emperor, was a mystic, a talented poet, and a skilled calligrapher. But while Zafar's Mughal ancestors had controlled most of India, the aged Zafar was king in name only. Deprived of real political power by the East India Company, Zafar nevertheless succeeded in creating a court of great brilliance, and presided over one of the great cultural renaissances of Indian history.

Then in 1857 Zafar's flourishing capital became the centre of an uprising that reduced his beloved Delhi to a battered, empty ruin. When Zafar gave his blessing to a rebellion among the Company's own Indian troops, it transformed an army mutiny into the largest uprising the British Empire ever had to face. The Siege of Delhi was the Raj's Stalingrad: a fight to the death between two powers, neither of whom could retreat. The Last Mughal is a portrait of the dazzling Delhi Zafar personified, the story of the last days of the great Mughal capital and its final destruction in the catastrophe of 1857. William Dalrymple's powerful retelling of this fateful course of events is shaped from groundbreaking material: previously untranslated Urdu and Persian manuscripts that include Indian eyewitness accounts, and the records of the Delhi courts, police, and administration during the siege. The Last Mughal is an extraordinary revisionist work with clear contemporary echoes. It is the first account to present the Indian perspective on the siege, and has at its heart the stories of the forgotten individuals tragically caught up in one of the bloodiest upheavals in history.

    brilliant,riveting and brutally honest..

The Last Mughal - A brilliant portray of 1857.. A must recommended for all who are interested in history of India... A elaborate and heart wrenching depiction of Delhi of 1857, of what could have been and should have been, of rebel atrocities and British vengeance.. Of a king of a decaying dynasty who did all he could only to be made a villain in the history and also to a never told story of Hindu-Muslim unity where in an army of high caste Hindus rallied to revive the Mughal dynasty fighting...

    POIGNANT YET UNPUTDOWNABLE

Once again Dalrymple enthralls and enlightens us through his in depth research, vivid description and intelligent and honest analysis. The amount of research and effort that has gone into writing this book is commendable and i salute Dalrymple for undertaking the mammoth work. It is perhaps the first account of the mutiny from the Indian point of view. Even though it does not give us the entire story and centres round the part played by bahadur shah zafar, the reader can very well piece toget...

    Excellently Tempting

I read a few of the reviews of this marvellous book and found all of them very tempting and forcing me very strongly to buy the book. Most probably I'll buy it next month as my this month's budget for buying books is over. Next month I have to jump the list of books which I want to buy and have to give priority to this book.

Even before reading the book, I'm giving it a rating of '5 Star'.

    A masterpiece !!

The book is perfect example of an exhaustive research based historical review of an event that changed the nation and probably brought in sense of nationalism for the first time ever in people of this land. Its a sheer emotionally charged masterpiece which lets you actually visualize the life and events in Delhi in 1857. You just can't stop empathizing with the "last Mughal". Had this book been not there I would have had the conventional schema about this period based on my crude knowledge ga...

Yet another addition to my collection of Books on History

I got this book during a heavy discount time for Rs.193..!!!. Very happy to have got hold of this. As a person who is so interested in collecting books on history, autobiographies & biographies, this is a very good addition to my collection. It's a must read for anyone who wishes to take a glimpse of the period just before Mughal empire's demise.

Also i was dying to read one of William Dalrymple's work. No regrets. Haven't completed reading the book though. But worth a buy def.

    Engaging, academic, well researched narrative

The best part of the book is its impassivity.. The writer does not write with either a western or with a Mughal sympathiser's bias. It is engaging, almost lyrical, like telling an interesting story of olden times, critiquing aspects of both the cultures. What is impressive is the extent to which the man has gone to establish credibility and remove traces of bias which might creep in a story like this. The choice of adjectives, poetry add colour to avoid it from the shackles of documentation. ...

    A must read

William Dalrymple has done a wonderful job in recreating this piece of history. Doesn't remember the last time I read such a vivid account on the Indian Mutiny in so great a dramatic style. His writing is unbiased and keep you seated to the end. Thank you Mr. Dalrymple for this wonderful book.

    Extraordinary!!

    Darlymple writes beautifully!!
He visits 19th century delhi and takes you along for the ride. You live amidst the delhi elite, taste their luxury, hear their rumors, and feel their fear. Even though a brit himself Darlymple never seems biased. He dwells elaborately on the prejudice of the company personell and the dying breed of those whom he calls "the white mughals". Whites who have adapted the lifstyle of the delhi elite... people like ochterloney, the frasers & the skinners who live in th...
